Solutions

The Pass It On Center is dedicated to promoting successful practices for AT Reuse and assisting with shaping solutions for AT Reuse Programs. Solutions and successful practices are gathered by Center staff, national reuse leaders, and YOU!. As we grow, the Solutions Site will also include sections on:

- legal, liability and regulatory information,

- a sample floor plan for reuse of AT and DME,

- a tips and tools page for individuals with disabilities who want to make informed decisions about purchasing used AT,

- sustainability planning tools, and

- Tips and Tools documents for recycling various types of equipment.

 1) Sustainability Tools

The Finance Project: The Finance Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting sustainability for programs serving families, children, and the community. The Finance Project provides technical assistance to improve policies, programs, and financial strategies. (www.financeproject.org)

2) Volunteers

- Hands-On National Network: The Hands-On National Network is the parent organization of local Hands-On projects, and contains both national and international listings. The Hands-On projects focus on community service and have a large volunteer base. http://www.handsonnetwork.org/home/ 

- Telecom Pioneers Project (Bellsouth): The Telecom Pioneers Project is run by Bellsouth, Inc., and Pioneers volunteers specialize in community service related to telecommunications. http://www.bellsouthpioneers.org/WhatWeDoRegion.htm

- Goodwill International, Inc.: Goodwill International provides vocational training to people with disabilities of all types, and operates one of the largest donation/collection services in the U.S. Goodwill’s U.S. program has served as a model for reuse and sustainability, and was featured at the first Pass It On Reuse Conference in 2005. http://www.ging.org 

- United Way of America: United Way has a very large and well-organized volunteer base that supports a variety of community programs. United Way is one of the largest volunteer service organizations in the world. http://www.unitedway.org 

- United Way International: United Way International administers programs for community service, donation, and reuse in locations around the world. http:// www.uwint.org

- Easter Seals: Easter Seals is a national organization dedicated to support of people with developmental and other disabilities. Chapters exist in every state and US territory. http://www.easterseals.org

- Salvation Army: The Salvation Army’s mission is to provide social services and assistance to children, adults, and the elderly. Their programs are nationwide, and includes distribution and reuse of a wide variety of items, as well as adult rehabilitation programs. http://www.salvationarmyusa.org

- Volunteer Match: Volunteer Match is a tool which can be used to recruit volunteers for a project, or find volunteer assistance. Volunteer Match covers all of the U.S. and several countries internationally. http://www.volunteermatch.org 

PC Usergroups

- Association of Personal Computer User Groups: The APCUG is a resource for all known Personal Computer User Groups in the United States and elsewhere. PC User groups specialize in setup, installation, PC upgrades, and offer training in local areas for interested PC owners. Some local PC usergroups may serve as good resources for collaboration as part of PC reuse and recycling programs. http://www.apcug.net/

- PC Usergroups on the WWW: This is a searchable database with a variety of usergroups located both nationally and internationally. (Please note that this is not a “WWW” address.) http://easyrsvp.com/ugotw/

- The Atlanta Macintosh Users Group (Atlanta, GA) This usergroup in Atlanta, Georgia is one of many usergroups in the WWW database, and focuses on Macintosh software and systems. http://www.amugonline.org/index.php?page=Home

3) PC Reuse National Models:

- National Cristina Foundation ( http://www.cristina.org/index.html ) The National Cristina Foundation (NCF) is a program focused on reuse and recycling of computers for children with disabilities. The NCF has become a model program in many areas, including their volunteer program, and focus on reuse.

- Tech Corps: The Tech Corps program focuses on teacher training and technical support within local schools and school districts. The Tech Corps model has been successful for over 10 years. ( www.techcorps.org )

4) End-of-Life Recycling

- Delaware Citizens’ Computer Recycling Pilot Project (PDF File)http://www.epa.gov/epr/docs/delaware.pdf
This pilot project, conducted jointly with the EPA and state of Delaware, provides information on successful recycling models.

- Dell Computer, Inc. Recycling Efforts: Information on how to recycle and reuse computers through Dell, Inc., and on partnering with Dell to reuse older models.

- ReThink – Ebay’s E-Waste Project: Launched by E-Bay in collaboration with manufacturers of a variety of personal devices, ReThink aims to reduce or eliminate the amount of electronic waste (e-waste) and abandonment through this program. http://rethink.ebay.com/

- Tech Soup: Tech Soup provides a central site for nonprofit and community service organizations to download Microsoft-certified software, free or at minimal cost. http://www.techsoup.org/

- Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher Program: Describes the process for becoming a MAR and the benefits of being a MAR, of great help to computer reuse programs. http://www.techsoup.org/mar/default.aspx

- Open Office: Open Office is open-code software made available to the general public. It is an alternative to Microsoft Office and other word-processing programs. www.openoffice.org

- Open Office Download Central: Download Central provides a central site for downloading the Open Office program as well as a variety of other open-code, free, or minimal cost software. http://download.openoffice.org/index.html

- The Hubscrub Company: The Hubscrub Company is a manufacturer of portable automated cleaning and infection control systems for durable medical equipment that includes wheelchairs, hospital beds, and other mobility and ..
